In Lima 2019, the swimming competition will consist of 36 events: 17 for men, 17 for women and two for mixed categories. The competition will be conducted in eight lanes, with heats for all events, except for 800 m freestyle, 1500 m freestyle free and relay events. The first two will be conducted with heats with final times, with the fastest eight seeded swimmers competing in the evening final sessions. Relay events will feature preliminary heats and finals. The absolute leader of this sport in the Pan American Games is the United States with 703 medals, with 323 gold medals. It is followed by Canada and Brazil with 52 gold medals each. History

Records show signs of this sport from the Stone Age (7500 years ago) and also in more recent times in Egypt, Japan and Greece. At the beginning of the 19th century, swimming was established as a sport in Great Britain with the foundation of the National Swimming Society in 1837. It was part of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896, in men’s category. Women’s category started in 1912. It has been part of all the Pan American Games since its first edition and is one of the most popular sports.
