In Para table tennis, athletes are grouped across a total of 11 sport classes, which reflect the degree and type of impairment. Sport classes 1 to 10 group athletes with a physical impairment or cerebral palsy, where 1 means the most severe and 10 the less severe condition.
Athletes in sport classes 1 to 5 compete in wheelchairs while those in sport classes 6 to 10 compete in a standing position. Sport class 11 is reserved for athletes with intellectual impairment. This sport was included in the Paralympic program in 1960 and in the Mexico City 1999 Parapan American Games.
